Q&A with Sherry from The Little Beading Closet
Q: Who are you? Introduce yourself!
I have been living in beautiful coastal South Carolina
since 1993 with my husband, our teenage son, my 93 year old mother in law and our three dogs. When I have time to step away from my role as director of domestic affairs I love nature and being outside gardening and boating, I’m naturally optimistic and enjoy finding the beauty in everyday life. I received a Bachelor of Arts from Coastal Carolina University and worked professionally in the print media field as Director of Photography at Strand Media Group.
I enjoy many different art mediums. If I'm not beading I'm probably snapping photos or painting with watercolors and acrylics. Occasionally dabbling in mixed media and acrylic inks but I love to make beaded jewelry designs. To me designing with beads is about what can be formed or take shape using different stitches and beads. I approach beading kind of like a puzzle and once it's finished, I'm ready to move onto a new design. Seeing the designs take place in my hands is very fulfilling.
Q: How long have you been beading? How did you get started?
I have been beading consistently since 2020 although I have always had a love for beads. Some of my earliest memories of beading date back to when I was 8 years old. My parents moved to Utah and we had neighbors that were part of a Native American tribe, unfortunately I don't remember which one, and they would make beaded belts at home as a family activity. Just feeling the beads used in that medium and seeing this left me with a sense of amazement and awe about beading in general. We only lived in Utah for two short years before moving back to the East Coast. As a teen and during early adulthood I would occasionally string some beads together to make a necklace and feel fulfilled.
I dove headfirst into beading and didn’t look back staring in 2020. I started by growing a collection of Delica beads because I knew I wanted to do loom work; it’s both a tedious and rewarding process. Then I walked into a brick and mortar bead store that had pretty much everything under the sun. The experience of seeing all those beads and finished pieces on display really just inspired me to try off loom jewelry making. A few months later the store closed, when the owner moved out of state, and I was on my own.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about beading?
Just trying things and designing until something comes to life. I hardly ever start with anything in mind, rather I let the beads guide me. Beading is a very relaxing and rewarding medium to work with. Really every aspect: from picking out beads, collecting beads and organizing beads. Think: LIVE & DREAM BEADS!
Q: What’s your number one advice for new beaders?
You can do it! Don’t forget it’s only one bead at a time. Pick a project or pattern that you’re inspired by no matter how difficult it may seem, and just try. You can really only learn by doing.

Q: What’s something you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
When you buy seed beads, and you need black for example, buy every size!!! Get the 15, 11, 8, and 6/0s when available from the same manufacturer. Buy quality beads and supplies to avoid frustration later on. Use good lighting so you don't strain your eyes! Use actual beading needles and beading thread.
Q: What’s your favorite project that you’ve done?
I’m sentimental and a little old-fashioned. My favorite project was a beaded wall hanging that I made for my Husband on Father's Day. The piece incorporated loom work with a Napoleon motif and bead work surrounding the hanging bar. Finished with tassels using some of my favorite beads and decorative fringe on the bottom.
