beading scissors

Scissors

Scissors are used to cut fireline, c-lon, nymo, and other stringing materials.  You will also use them to cut your bead strands.

 crimping pliers for jewelry projects

Crimping Pliers

Crimping pliers are used to attach crimp beads to the ends of flexible beading wire such as Soft Flex. Crimping pliers use a two-step process to crimp the crimp beads. Crimping pliers come in different sizes and are to be used with various crimp bead sizes. The Micro Crimper uses 1x1mm crimp beads, regular crimping pliers use 2x2mm and 2x1mm crimp beads, and the Mighty Crimper uses 3x3mm crimp beads.

 Chain Nose Pliers

Chain Nose Pliers

Chain nose pliers have flat, smooth, tapered noses for gripping, bending and manipulating wire. The tapered nose is ideal for reaching into small spaces and maneuvering the wire with precision. Chain nose pliers are available in different levels of quality. Higher-quality tools usually come with ergonomic grips and adjustable tension, which will help make your hands more comfortable while beading. Chain nose pliers are mostly used for wire wrapping and chainmail.

 Round Nose Pliers

Round Nose Pliers

Round nose pliers have smooth, tapered, cone like noses used to create loops with wire. The cone shaped nose enables you to shape the wire around it to create perfect circles or loops. Round nose pliers come in many different levels of quality. You will notice the differences in the quality of the grip, tension and size range. Higher-quality tools come with ergonomic grips and adjustable tension. These features help to keep your hands more comfortable while beading. Round nose pliers are used for wire wrapping and other metal projects.

 Wire Cutters

Wire Cutters

Wire cutters have two sharp blades that cut wire. There are different types of cutters, like side wire cutters and flush cutters. They come in a wide range of prices and quality. The highest quality will snip wire with a clean cut that leaves no burrs to snag or scratch. Cutters have certain ratings for which wire they can cut. To make sure that your cutters last, only use them as directed.  Be sure not to cut memory wire with them because they will be ruined.

 memory wire cutters

Memory Wire Cutter

A memory wire cutter is a heavy-duty wire cutter that cuts in a shearing action just like scissors. They are made to make a smooth, clean cut in memory wire, which is a strong, hard steel wire.  Other types of cutters cannot be used to cut memory wire because they will be ruined. Memory wire cutters will not make clean cuts in other lighter-weight wire.

 jewelry polishing pads

Polishing Pad

Polishing pads are used to remove tarnish from sterling silver and gold filled beads. They also work great on finished jewelry too.  These pads do not leave any residue.

 Bead Reamer

Bead Reamer

A bead reamer is used to enlarge holes in beads.  They work best in semi-precious stones and pearls. It is best to use it underwater so the friction doesn’t overheat the bead and break it.  Don’t use it in glass beads.

 beading needles

Beading Needles

Beading needles come in different sizes. The most popular are sizes 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15. The smaller the needle size, the larger the needle. Beading needles are longer and thinner than typical sewing needles so that more beads can be picked up at once and so that the needle can go through a bead a couple of times. Beading needles are used for loom and off-loom beadweaving techniques.

 big eye beading needles

Big Eye Needles

Big eye needles are a metal needle that is flexible and it has an eye that opens from one end of the needle to the other.  They are primarily used with thread that will not fit through a regular beading needle.  For example, you would use them with c-lon, pearl cotton and more.

 sharps needles

Sharps

Sharps needles are 1 inch long and come in sizes 10, 11, 12 and 13. As with the beading needles, the smaller the needle size, the larger the needle. Sharps needles are mostly used for bead embroidery because they are small and pointy.  This helps them to go through fabric easier.

 beeswax

Bees Wax

Natural beeswax is used just like thread heaven.  It is an excellent conditioner that helps to prevent knots and fraying. Bees Wax also helps to keep doubled thread together and to keep it from tangling.

 beading loom

Looms

A loom is a tool that is used to make small beaded items such as belts, keychains, jewelry and headbands.  There are two main types of looms.  The first type of loom is the kind that you have a lot of warp threads to weave in at the end of the project.  The second type is newer and it only has two warp threads to weave in which makes them more appealing.

 knotting pliers

Knotting Pliers

Knotting pliers have a fine nose tip which is used to pull the knot down into place by the bead.  It makes it easier to grab the lip on the knot to move the knot down to the bead. Use these bead knotting pliers for traditional or contemporary bead or pearl knotting designs.

 knotting tool

Knotting Tool

The knotting tool works both as a tweezer and a beading awl.  It gives you the ability to place tight and consistent knots between beads when you are making pearl-knotted designs. This professional-quality knotting tool is ambidextrous.  Just be very careful with the end because it is very pointy and sharp.

 tweezers

Tweezers

Tweezers are used for picking up and placing beads and other small items. There are many different types of tweezers.  You will have to decide which ones to use depending on what you need them for.  For example, the fine tips of bead knotting tweezers help you get into tight spots and help pull the knot down to the bead.

 thread burner

Thread Burner

A thread burner is a heating element tip that melts and cauterizes thread.  It is used to trim threads that you couldn’t cut close enough with scissors.  It also will keep it from fraying.  This awesome tool is ideal for use with K.O., Fireline, Nymo, C-lon and other synthetic beading threads.
